Movies About Writers

Couple watching TV

I’ve decided to embark on watching a series of movies about writers. In case you're interested in joining me, I thought I might share some of the titles I plan to watch, along with their loglines and the names of their top stars. I’ve actually seen all of those I’m mentioning here, but I do look forward to seeing them again as part of a Writers in Cinema journey. I think I liked all of these, and I hope you will too, should you decide to join me in the viewing! Those not available via streaming services are usually available through your local library, on DVD or digitally. I’m listing them in order of their release dates.

My Brilliant Career (1979) G “A proud young woman in early 20th century Australia must choose between marriage and independence.” Judy Davis and Sam Neill.

Dead Poets Society (1989) PG “Maverick teacher John Keating returns in 1959 to the prestigious New England boys’ boarding school where he was once a star student, using poetry to embolden his pupils to new heights of self-expression.” Robin Williams and Ethan Hawke

Finding Forrester (2000) PG-13 “Forrester, the author of a famous book, decides to help Jamal, a 16-year-old student, discover his writing prowess by mentoring him and enrolling him into a prestigious private school.” Sean Connery and Rob Brown.

Stranger Than Fiction (2006) PG-13 “IRS auditor Harold Crick suddenly finds his mundane Chicago life to be the subject of narration only he can hear; narration that begins to affect his entire existence from his work to his love life to his death.” Will Ferrell and Emma Thompson

Bright Star (2009) PG “Nineteenth-century English poet John Keats and his dressmaking neighbor Fanny Browne have total disregard for each other. An unlikely romance develops, and they fall deeply in love near the end of his life.” Abbie Cornish and Ben Whishaw

Midnight in Paris (2011) PG-13 “While on a trip to Paris with his fiancee’s family, a nostalgic screenwriter finds himself mysteriously going back to the 1920s every day at midnight.” Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams

Do let me know if you see (or have seen) any of these and what you think. If you join me, I wish you happy viewing!
