At least once a day I spend a little (okay, a lot of) time scrolling through Instagram, X, and Facebook. I enjoy posts about the babies and the doggos, and the feel-good financial surprises given to people in need. I love the occasional post about nature, art, fashion, film, literature, and definitely about the hilarious things we humans do.
But I obviously spend too much time watching posts about the chaos going on in our world, because the algorithms keep sending me those posts too. It can be so upsetting and worrisome to come across the evidence of mankind’s sin and acts of evil against one another. It makes me feel impotent regarding efforts to help those who need protection and justice. Maybe you know that feeling too.
In times of turmoil and uncertainty, I have to reflect on what my son often says when I get worked up: “God is in control.” Psalm 46:1-3 gives us that powerful reminder. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging."
Those verses can be an anchor for the soul. He is in control. He is ever-present. And He is ready to help mankind through any trouble. None of this world’s behavior has taken our God by surprise.
